03/07/08Joint letter to all NUT & UNISON members about the UNISON/UNITE STRIKEHaringey UNISON members who are based in schools are taking strike action on 16th and 17th July 2008.
Their dispute is similar to the NUT’s dispute with the Government for failing to increase pay in line with inflation.
NUT members have not been balloted to take action on those days and should work as normal but not carry out any duties which are properlythose of staff who are taking industrial action. It is important that the effectiveness of the UNISON action is not undermined. They willhave the full support of the NUT in refusing to take on the work ofthose who are on strike.
Where there are guidelines for adult pupil ratio, for example in Nursery classes or for school trips, the headteacher should make arrangements to ensure that the necessary number of pupils do not cometo school on the strike day(s), so that the ratios are observed, andthat teachers are not put in the position of carrying out the work of UNISON members.
There may be UNISON picket lines. The purpose of these is to persuadeUNISON members to support the strike, and to request teachers and other staff not to carry out the work of those on strike. There is no intention by UNISON to request teachers to take strike action. NUTmembers may only be called on to take strike action by the NUT after aballot and there has been no such ballot.
We urge all NUT members to support UNISON in their campaign – donations to their hardship funds would be appreciated.
